Notes

Recorded live in East Sussex, UK 1985/85
  • By 'live in East Sussex' I assume it means Brighton. Swans played there in 1985 anyway - at the Zap Club. This was back in the days when the Zap was just one small tunnel. The band half-filled the tunnel with their own PA system. I know what they were trying to do - get the audience to shit themselves or vomit or something. Ha ha, it nearly worked. The sound was so loud in that confined space it was actually frightening. Not so much a gig - more like a terrifying fairground ride. Of course the band played their pulverising stop/start set of abnormal hardcore. The silences between the chords were the appalling harbinger of the next pneumatic slamdown. I could feel my cheeks flapping ... and my trousers too come to that. It was waaaay to loud anyway and I left before the end. Funnily enough - went straight to a bar where they were playing some fairly loud music - but after Swans it was like listening to delightful birdsong. I heard that the band did structral damage to the Zap that night although that might be urban myth.I liked Swans during this period anyway. A sequence of fabulous nihilistic albums, totally uncompromising. The next year they played back in Brighton but at the Pavilion Theatre in New Road. I went along and heard the soundcheck but didn't go to the gig - I knew it could not match the year before.I actually interviewed Michael Gira on both occasions. Before the Zap gig I went down with my trusty Uher. He was not very forthcoming but it was ok. The next year I dragged him over the road to the radio station I worked in... which was just around the corner (BBC Radio Sussex geography fans). He was a bit more talkative this time and I think the interview came out ok. Sadly both these tapes are now lost - along with 99% of all the interviews I did at the time with all the bands that came to town during the mid - late 80s/early 90s - Scratch Acid, Big Black, Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Naplam Death, fIREHOSE, Live Skull, The Stupids, Henry Rollins, No Means No, Rhythm Pigs....+ loads and loads that I now can't remember. Pity I never kept them... but they were all on reel-to-reel and just got dumped after TX. Ah well, that's why rare stuff is rare I guess. Anyway - by live in East Sussex 1985 / 86 I guess they mean Brighton Zap 85 and Pavilion Theatre 86.... why they say East Sussex is anybody's guess.
