  • The Drum & Bass Master Remixes Function and Kero on Detroit Underground 13.By Emily CopelandElectronic music development in our region can be attributed to a huge number of musicians that constantly develop new creative trends and form important links that make their futuristic vision possible. Take Todd Osborn aka Soundmurderer and Sohail Azad, better known as Kero, for example. Their sonic and technological contributions are too many to list, but I will say that Kero sends his music through some of the most powerful, compact and efficient machines designed by advanced composers, like the Pacarana and Kyma Software. It’s not just the technology that matters, rather its what comes out of it that moves people. On an immediate scale, Soundmurderer’s latest set at Oslo made the whole room move at once: the producer’s experiments with dub sounds brought him to create (and play) a dubstep remix Its time for the Perculator that makes sense of dubstep as dance music, as it maintains the timing of a four-to-the-floor dance beat with a thundering bassline beneath that commonly characterizes the young genre, that reliable snare slap on the third beat.Detroit’s dubstep scene is beginning to reach new levels, with more song creators emerging and DJ’s experimenting with styles. Together with Dave Sumner as Function and Kero, a glitch-syncopated two-step IDM track is born, the new Soundmurderer (aka Osborne, Murk) dubstep remix of Function Kero. The remix, to be released on the same 12” as four other remixes ranging in styles from tech-house to minimal techno, will be available April 20 to the masses. If you heard it before, it may be because it dropped into Aphex Twin’s mix for the first time in public at the 2009 Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona and the track is proving to be a mainstay on the Rephlex owner’s spring 2010 tour set.Aptly titled, the original track Function Kero is a song composed of parts taken from Function’s (David Sumner) work as Portion Reform alongside Regis (aka Karl O’Connor), favorites among UK label Downwards fans for always hanging on the edge of techno’s abstract side. Soundmurderer had carved his name into drum & bass with his LP Wired For Sound and an EP, Manhunt Remixesamong others. He hadn’t entered the picture yet but it wasn’t long before Soundmurderer’s forward techniques and production concepts attracted Kero’s attention. In the meantime, Kero formed Re:Group with Sumner and O’Connor, releasing Asbestos on Sumner’s Infrastructure imprint and later The Antichance EP in 2009 on Detroit Underground on vinyl with popular demand for the experimental techno releases. The new tracks on the Function Kero release remain anything but predictable. Function Kero features both pros and skilled newcomers, with Ghostly/Rephlex recording artist Soundmurderer from Ann Arbor pulling the most audible weight. It’s a solid match for these peculiarly enigmatic musicians who have come together to release a new sound that doesn’t repeat itself or over-emphasize dubstep’s role for relaxed timing, which is probably why it’s the first track on Side A.
